Alaskan Klee Kai

Q & A

What are some good Alaskan Klee Kai resources?

The United Kennel Club, Linda Spurlin's - History of the Alaskan Klee Kai, and other Breeder's websites. Though the best resource is the dog itself. If you really want to get to know the breed please schedule a time to meet with an owner or breeder and find out for yourself.

Are the Alaskan Klee Kai good travelers?

Yes, there are some that can get motion-sickness, but we have not had that experience. Ours have traveled very well by car, truck, boat, small planes and large commercial airliners.

How are they with Children?

The Alaskan Klee Kai tend to be cautious around children. We have taught our two a command when it is okay to greet someone "Say Hello"- accompanied with a hand signal.. It is important to demonstrate to young children how to greet your dog, and ensure that the dog will go to them, not the other way around.

Are the Alaskan Klee Kai easy to train?

Our experience with both of our dogs leads us to answer "that depends" and I'll explain why. The Alaskan Klee Kai was bred down from the Alaskan Husky and a few other Northern Breeds. Many of them carry the same mentality, temperament, and instinct as their ancestors. The AKK are very fast and agile, can be diggers, and are not to be trusted off leash unless in an enclosed area. If other dogs are present, make sure you and your dog know the other dogs and their owners before going off-leash in the enclosed area.

Our first Alaskan Klee Kai, Kona, was a fireball of a puppy. Very, very active and incredibly intelligent. He was not afraid or cautious of anything, meaning large construction trucks, fireworks, loud noises, charging dogs, people, children, or anything else for that matter. Training for him included a puppy class starting right at 10 weeks old, followed by 4 classes a week (one puppy agility class). He thought that every dog had to be played with and had some listening problems (that husky mindset)- he knew what to do, but made it clear that he wanted to complete the task on his own time. Wanting to be responsible parents, we enrolled him all those classes and really worked with him. After that he remained in agility and entered Novice Obedience class. He still has those husky moments, but rarely, and has done a complete circle. Kona is now a Therapy Dog and gets to enjoy his love of people, while being well behaved in an interesting environment.

Our second AKK, Storm, has a completely different personality, and was much easier to train. We have a feeling that Kona pretty much trained her by her watching his response to commands. Regardless, she is a Velcro dog. She likes to know where you are at all times, and is usually in whatever room you are in. She is very well behaved, loves to please, and her recall is fantastic! Storm went through puppy class, and basic obedience- though we modified some of her exercises because we planned to show her. She use to be cautious with people, but has come out of her shell nicely.

We like to do mini training sessions at home, and enjoy giving the dogs individual training- they love it too!

So, the AKK are easy to train, but "that depends" on if you are willing to put in the necessary time, money and energy depending on the personality you are blessed with.

How do the Alaskan Klee Kai do in all weather conditions?

There are Alaskan Klee Kai living all over the world, warm, temperate, and cold climates. We have noticed here in MN where the temperature can range from 100 degrees to negative 45, that in the extreme temperatures ours like to go in and out a number of times for very brief periods. They love all kinds of conditions, and will surprise you when they want to go out in the worst storm of the year. I always put out water with ice during the hot months, and they have a pool to cool off in as well. In the cold months I keep a close eye on them and the door for when they want to come in. Ours spend most of their time with us in our home, so they are use to a nice 70 degrees for most of the year.

What sizes do the Alaskan Klee Kai come in?

The Alaskan Klee Kai come in all three sizes, Standard, Minature, and Toy. The unique thing with the AKK is that you could get all three sizes in the same litter.
