Why are your Alaskan Klee Kai so active in Dog Events?

We don't have any children and so our dogs are our world. We enjoy spending time with them and the events such as Agility, Conformation, Weight Pulling, Obedience, and being a Therapy Dog provide great stimulation and enjoyment for the dogs and something for us all to be excited about. We will not subject our dogs to an event that they dislike, as we want what is best for them mentally and physically.

How did you first hear about the Alaskan Klee Kai and what made you decide it was right for you?

Matt has always wanted a Husky, we lived in an apartment for a while that did not allow dogs, hence Mac came into our lives. But lets face it, a bird is not a dog. Years later, Matt still wanted a Husky, and Kristi knew that she would be the one to take care of it AND walk it. Since we both have fairly busy lives we knew that miles a day walking simply wouldn't fit our lifestyles. One day, Matt found a super cute photo of "Kodiak" sitting in a pumpkin. Matt convinced Kristi that these dogs were very small husky's and were breed to be companion lap-sized dogs. Knowing that he had done his research on this breed, and being able to field every question that Kristi had, she knew that this was what he really wanted. See the thing is that Matt never owned a dog before, much less anything larger than a gerbil, and Kristi was raised around all sorts of animals, so she knew the additional responsibility in raising a puppy. Matt and Kristi together researched different breeders, joined some Yahoo discussion groups, and filled out a few questionnaires. At the same time we decided that Mac needed another buddy- we stumbled upon a bird breeder in our area and happen upon Ziggy. We knew that Ziggy was going to be coming home in March, and then got a call from Wiebelhusky's kennel that our new puppy would be arriving in 8 weeks at the same time of Ziggy's arrival. Our home was extremely busy with preparations! Having to quarantine a new bird and contain a new puppy was quite the challenge, but we managed to get through it with everyone healthy and happy.

Why did you become a breeder?

Before we even got Kona we had no plans of breeding and simply wanted a fixed pet. Some breeders and owners saw photos of Kona and convinced us that he was such a nice looking dog that we should reconsider having him fixed. We talked things over with his breeder, and decided that we would wait and see how his conformation turned out. After one year of age, we knew that he had criptorchid, which we were watching for all along. And in consultation with our vet we decided to have him neutered. To us he is still perfect and has great conformation, personality and disposition. As Kona was growing up, our home acted as a meet-and-greet for prospective puppy owners. They would come over and meet Kona and ask us questions, and we in-turn interviewed them as well. Getting to meet such nice people from the metro area that were excited about this breed was wonderful for us. We also began taking Kona and later Storm to the Renaissance Festival to help familiarize more people to the breed, and provide great socialization for the dogs. Being a spokesperson in such a large environment, with everyone we crossed wanting one, we knew that we could do more for this breed. We enjoyed Kona so much, even with the 4 classes a week at one point, that we knew we had to get another one. So we began the breeder search again, which was easier the second time around because we were more active in the AKK community. We now had a lot more criteria when searching for our second dog. We decided that we wanted to breed, and bring others the joy and excitement that we had with Kona.

How much do you charge for a puppy?

These Alaskan Klee Kai are United Kennel Club Registered, Purple Ribbon, Pure-Bread dogs. Each puppy is individually priced taking into account if it will be a breeding quality, show quality, or pet quality puppy..  We will not set prices until a litter is born.  If you are truly interested please fill out a questionnaire.

Do you ship puppies?

We prefer not to ship our puppies, but will take all travel plans into consideration when selecting potential families.

Do you have naming requirements?

Yes, we do in addition to the UKC naming requirements. We will permanently register dogs with UKC.

I'm interested in an Alaskan Klee Kai from Kona's Kennelette, what steps do I need to take?

First you must submit a completed questionnaire, the more information you can provide the better as this begins the interview process. We will not consider placing a puppy with your family without this important initial step. Secondly, we will review your questionnaire and answer any initial questions you may have. Be prepared, we may do a home check. In this step we, or a trusted family member or friend will come to your home have a look around and ask you some additional questions. If your questionnaire is approved you will be placed on our waiting list. The list is first approved, gets first priority, based on your selected preferences. You may notify us at anytime if you wish to be removed from our waiting list.
